Place : International Center of Photography (ICP / N.Y.)※round of CANADA etc...

Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan will present the exciting and highly individualistic work of a new generation of Japanese artists who have come of age following the Asian economic crash of 1990. For the last several years, China has been the focus of attention for contemporary Asian art, while the remarkable and distinctive younger generation of Japanese artists who are working today has been largely ignored. This ICP exhibition will be the first major U.S. presentation of contemporary photo-based artwork from Japan in over ten years. Heavy Light will present the work of fourteen artists and will fill most of the ICP gallery space. The exhibition will include both photographs and video, many of which are large and dramatic pieces. Curated by ICP curator Christopher Phillips and Noriko Fuku of the University of Art and Design in Kyoto, Heavy Light will be accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue and a range of public programs.

■8,April,2008
SUZUKI, Ryoko group exhibition
Another Voice
----WE
During : 20, April.2008〜3,May.2008
Place :SHANGHAI ART MUSEUM
Theme Statement:
Art by women artists is a branch of rising academic interest in Chinese contemporary art, and adds variety to social and cultural awareness. It features women’s thinking about social realities after China’s Economic Reformation and their specific standpoints, as conveyed by their practice. That is how the title of this exhibition is derived. The participating artists, from different social backgrounds, will contribute their independent thinking on the various issues which confront humanity, and questioning of the conventional views about gender. With their feminine sensitivity and experiences, they will reveal the differences in gender cultures, and offer us an alternative awareness of our social realities.
Besides the emphasis on gender differences as manifested in the artists and their work, this exhibition shall explore the relation between gender awareness and sociology. In face of an age of multiplicity and complexity, the artists will, starting from their personal experiences, discuss the present gender relation in social structure and put forward challenging questions in their express ion of their reasonable expectation of gender power relationship.
The women artists shall pursue the value and way of life with their own vocabulary, which involves their criticism of the existing gender relations and reflections on themselves. In the social structure which features multiplicity, it is of great relevance to listen to the voice of women and to examine and reevaluate this value system which is gaining ground. This exhibition is expected to enable China to keep abreast of the present current of the world.

Photography is a common language amongst different places and groups of people.
In the span of time and space, it has greatly influenced the life of every individual.
From the moment it was born, photography has left a deep mark on historical representation,
becoming a narrator and carrier of modern, global civilization. In today’s globalized
vision of the cultural landscape, photography-as-art is playing a greater role
in the evolution of every culture.
