「2009/1989 　Coming Closer and Getting Further Away」


20 years ago, in 1989, I held my first solo exhibition entitled ‘Haru wa Akebono [Dawn in Spring]’. Since then, I’ve been producing new works every year, and have not thought back much to my early works. However, this time, an encounter with the fascinating two-story space with bare concrete walls in Tokyo Art Museum, designed by Tadao Ando, made me wish to see my newest works―ones from ‘half awake and half asleep in the water’ and cityscapes, taken overseas―along with those early black-and-white photographs, the origin of my photographic career. The ‘Haru wa Akebono’ series has a special meaning to me: it is the reminder of the time when I first travelled around Japan to shoot photographs. And this time, the most recent works from ‘half awake and half asleep in the water,’ which started in 2000, will be juxtaposed with my earliest ones, along with cityscapes. It will be interesting to see how all these pieces interact with one another: Sakurajima, Ariakekai, Taketomijima, Tsugaru, Miyakejima, Mikurajima, and Tokyo, in 1989; and the coastlines and cityscapes of Dubai, Jindo, New York, Paris, Cologne, Danshui, in 2008 and 2009. How will the different times and different places intertwine with one another?
