Miyako ISHIUCHI
Born in Gunma, raised in Yokosuka.
Major in textiles at university, started shooting photographs from 1975.
In the '80s, completed her early series of 3 works "Apartment" (shot
apartment houses around Yokosuka, Yokohama area). "Yokosuka Story",
and "Endless Night". She took photos of city sights and buildings.
In mid '90s, she released "To the Skin" shooting scars of female bodies
and "1・9・4・7", body parts like hands and feet of other women's at her
age.
She looks straight into the objects, prints the memories onto portraits
of them.
Awarded the 4th Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award ('79),
the 15th the Domestic Photographer Prize of the Higashikawa Prize ('99)
and more.
She is also so active outside of Japan that was selected as the first
female photographer to participate at Japanese pavilion exhibition for
Venice Biennal in 2005. Her "Mother's" is highly praised there.
2008, she released a photo book titled "Hiroshima". She shot some
portraits out of 19,000 remains of the Hiroshima victims stored at
Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Some remains like girl's clothes, shoes and
other things were put on a light box when shooting.
Her "Hiroshima" is totally new and outstanding among any other
photographs that were ever taken with the same theme "Hiroshima".
The show is on the road from Hiroshima, Tokyo and to other cities.
