Toshio SHIBATA
Born in Tokyo. Studied oil paintings, went to Belgium acquiring a
scholarship from the Education Ministry of Academy of Belgium.
He first got inspiration on photographs at the Royal Academy of Ghent,
then after returning to Japan, started to shoot. After having his first
solo show 'Europe in Winter' at Nikon salon, has been a very active
photographer, had many shows mostly at ZEIT-FOTO salon.
He was awarded the 17th. Ihee Kimura prize in 1989.
His photographs are often compared with New Topographic stream that is
dominant the United States. They take approach to the scenery that
human being have changed as to shoot objectively with a scientific way.
But Shibata clearly focuses on the fact that man made objects are also
effected by the power of nature. He does that in his own picturesque
way. He has released many photograph collection books like 'DAM'
'LANDSCAPE'.

House NY, Metropolitan Museum of Arts NY and more. Solo shows have been out at
The Art Institute of Chicago 'Toshio Shibata' in 1993 and many more. A solo exhibition
will be held at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in December, 2008.
